The nutrition label shows ‘Added Sugars’, where are those coming from?
The added sugars in each bar are coming only from our Agave Nectar - a plant-based sweetener that comes from the Agave plant. The FDA requires that we disclose Agave as an ‘added sugar’ despite it being a plant-derived Fructose sugar. All the other sugars listed come directly from the remaining ingredients and, by FDA standards, are not considered ‘added’.
Fructose sugar, also known as sugar from Fruit, reacts differently in your body than Sucrose, also known as table sugar. Unlike Sucrose, Fructose DOES NOT cause spikes in insulin and blood sugar.
Sugar gets a bad wrap in today’s health-driven world, but it is still a critical nutrient in sports nutrition. Athletes tend to burn through Glycogen stores (where your body stores broken down carbs & sugars) very quickly, therefore, your carbohydrate and sugar intake should be increased to prevent your body from depletion (AKA bonking). Instead of strictly avoiding sugar during athletic performance, take a moment to evaluate the source of sugar and assess what will work best for your body.
FUNCTION:
-
What does ‘Functional Energy’ mean?
If all food is energy, why do we use the term' ‘Functional Energy’ to describe our bars? We call them ‘Functional Energy’ bars because we chose each ingredient for each bar for a very specific reason. Looked for ingredients that suit what each specific activity needs to sustain energy and support holistic elements of recovery. In addition to the ingredients, we tailored the texture/consistency of each bar to meet the unique digestive needs of each sport. CLIMBER is going to have a much more coarse texture to encourage the slower burn during the anaerobic sport, while CYCLIST/RUNNER have a smoother texture to increase the speed of digestion for the aerobic sports (also, so you don’t feel like you have something sitting in your stomach).
For more information specific to each bar, including why we chose each ingredient for each bar, please visit the product pages.
-
Why are they focused on specific sports?
We set out to challenge the ‘one-size-fits-all’ energy bar and develop a product that was unique to a specific sport/activity.
You wouldn’t train for long-distance running, the same way you train for a climbing comp or a swim meet, so why treat your nutrition that way. We set out to choose all real-food ingredients that were individually selected with the goal of helping you properly fuel for your sport and support your unique recovery needs.
-
What are the Recovery health claims based on?
On each package you’ll notice that we specify the intent of each bar is to help you ‘X’ Harder + Recover Faster and that our products help Support specific elements of recovery.
To be clear: These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or chronic sources of pain & inflammation.
MISCELLANEOUS:
-
Do you make multiple flavors for each activity?
At this time, we only make one flavor profile for each sport.
That said, if you are an ENDURANCE athlete, we’d recommend using CYCLIST or RUNNER as interchangeable options.
Each bar has unique recovery nutrients that lend them to focus on that specific sport, but the texture/consistency is similar to meet endurance digestion needs, both have sufficient carb and sugar content to help prevent ‘bonking’ and keep you fueled.
-
What is the shelf life of each bar?
The shelf life of all our products is 12 months from the manufactured date. Each individual bar is labeled with the ‘Best By’ date for your convenience. You should not receive a product with less than 4 months shelf life remaining.
